Accelerated Reader
Students will participate in AR this year. I will set goals for each student and those who meet their goal will participate in our AR celebration at the end of each grading period. Students will keep up with their reading on a Reading Tracker.
WHAT IS AR? HOW DOES IT WORK?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based reading program that motivates students to read while managing their reading practice and assessing their reading comprehension. AR enhances skills taught in the classroom while allowing students to choose their books. Students will:
1. Take the STAR test – students will be tested to determine their ZPD (zone of proximal development). The ZPD is a range of reading levels that present enough challenge to encourage growth as a reader without being so difficult that they lead to frustration.
2. Select a book - students will choose their own books within their set reading level (see ZPD).
3. Read the book - students will read their chosen books during school and/or at home. Students may read books independently, read with someone, or have books read to them.
4. Take a test - students take a multiple-choice test on their chosen book to show how well they understood what they read. Points are awarded based on the length of the book and the percent of questions answered correctly. The focus of AR is on the quality of reading practice rather than on the quantity of points received.
WHAT ARE READING GOALS?
2nd grade goals- Students will have a reading goal based on their reading level and the number of books they plan to read during a set period (usually a grading period). These reading goals are measured in points earned from the books they have read and tested on successfully. Each student’s reading goal is different and is based on their current reading ability and their time spent reading. Students who meet reading goals are given a reward (determined by each individual teacher)
HOW ARE THE AR BOOKS MARKED?
AR books have an AR label on or inside the front cover with the book’s reading level and point value. A color-coded sticker on the spine of each AR book identifies the reading level range the book is in. This color-coding helps beginning and developing readers find the books they need for reading practice (purple = 0-0.9, green = 1.0-1.9, orange = 2.0-2.0, blue = 3.0-3.9, red = 4.0-4.9, black = 5.0 or higher.
